Julius J. Kim, Ph.D.
Dean of Students
Dear Students,
This last Wednesday, February 22, the weather in Boston averaged 34 degrees
Fahrenheit. Further south in Washington D.C., it was a bit warmer at 36 degrees.
While in Chicago, it was positively balmy at 37 degrees. What about here in
Escondido? Well, at 12:30pm, it was yet another picture perfect 70 degrees—the
ideal setting for the first Student Association-sponsored barbecue for the
spring semester. Wait a minute, a barbecue in February? That’s right. The
seminary community gathered together on the upper lawn last Wednesday to enjoy a
wonderful time of food and fellowship during the lunch hour. This encouraging
time not only allowed faculty members, administrative staff, and students to
enjoy delicious hamburgers and hot dogs, but also to foster deeper camaraderie.
This heartening time was made possible because of the tireless efforts of our
officers of the Student Association. Well, who are these officers and what
exactly do they do?
The Student Association is an organization made up of all full-time students of
the seminary as well as any part-time students who desire membership. It exists
to promote Christian fellowship and growth and to advance the purposes for which
the seminary stands—whether it’s keeping the Coke machine well stocked or
inviting special speakers to address the student body. But it’s the officers
elected by the students each year that actually make all the plans and provide
all the benefits for our students. They are the ones who work with the faculty,
administration, and other campus organizations in coordinating activities and
events which add to the quality of seminary life.
Some of those activities this year included a special reception at our opening
chapel/convocation as well as Dr. Peter
Jones's lecture on current pagan spirituality. In addition to special
events, these officers also take time each week to ensure there is hot coffee,
snacks, and lunch items available for students. And all this they do without
receiving any compensation or commendation. That’s why for this edition of
From the Dean’s Desk, I’d like to highlight one of the most important yet
unrecognized ingredients that makes our seminary more than just an educational
institution: the officers of the Student Association. They are:
President: Quentin Falkena
Vice President: Shane Lems
Secretary: Lana Korniyenko
Treasurer: Andrew Compton
On behalf of the faculty, staff, and students, thank you officers for what you
do in making this seminary such a great place to be. We thank God for you!
