Tuesday, November 15 in the chapel at WSC. The lecture
addressed "The Importance of the Penultimate: Reformed
Social Thought and the Contemporary Critiques of the Liberal
Society," and was presented before an audience of students,
staff, faculty, trustees and friends of the seminary.

OCTOBER 2005
Dr. Paul R. Schaefer at WSC
Dr. Paul R. Schaefer, Chair of the Department of Religion
and Philosophy at Grove City College in Pennsylvania,
lectured in chapel at WSC October 19th and 20th from 10:00 -
11:00 am. The theme of his talks were "Understanding
Puritanism through its Preaching and Piety."
Wednesday's talk addressed "William Perkins' The Art of
Prophesying: Preaching Law and Gospel to Know Christ." On
Thursday, Dr. Schaefer spoke on "Richard Sibbes on the Piety
of the Heart: Union and Communion with Christ in
Justification and Sanctification."
Godfrey at Reformation Conference in Dallas
Bethel PCA in Dallas, Texas hosted its first annual Fall Reformation Conference on October 21-22, 2005. Dr.
W. Robert Godfrey was the featured speaker. Audio of the lectures can be found here.
Bethel’s pastor, Rev. David Nutting ('03-M.Div.), hopes to
hold an annual conference on Reformation Theology and
History. The church’s desire is to be a Reformed witness in
a predominantly Southern Baptist dispensational culture.
AUGUST 2005
Dr. Michael Horton quoted in World Magazine
In an article on Israel's pullout of the Gaza strip in World
Magazine's August 20th issue, WSC professor Dr. Michael
Horton speaks as a representative for Reformed theology. The
article highlights three different views on the issue of
land and the state of Israel: dispensationalism, liberation
theology, and Reformed or covenant theology.
Dr. Horton gives a testimony to the supremacy of Christ in
all things: "In the new covenant, He is the Holy Land-Christ
and His church." To read the entire article:

JULY 2005
CPR Summer Sabbatical
The Center for Pastoral Refreshment (CPR) conducted its
third annual Summer Sabbatical. The Center welcomed pastors
during July 11-29, 2005 for a unique program of renewal and
rest.
CPR provided spiritual and physical renewal for Korean
pastors ministering in the US. The Center’s philosophy rests
upon three themes: Deepening the Theological, Building the
Collegial, and Experiencing the Physical. The unique
location of Westminster Seminary California, a short
distance from the ocean, mountains and desert, allows an
innovative integration of these geographic assets and the
Scriptural study of “God’s Two Books”–the book of
Scripture and the book of nature.
Daily meditations in the Psalms are conducted by the CPR
Executive Director, and provide the “Scriptural bridge.”
Academic offerings include two seminar tracks: Scripture and
Theology, and Scripture and Ministry, each taught by
Seminary faculty (with the assistance of translators), and
supplemented by assigned readings. Wilderness field trips
are conducted by a natural scientist. Pastors meet
individually with a personal fitness trainer and receive an
individually prescribed plan for exercise, which is reviewed
and evaluated upon their return in the second year.
The program is conducted as two ten-day retreats over two
consecutive years. In the second year, returning
participants joined with the incoming cohort of new
participants. Thus, program activities and content are
designed to repeat every two years. During the “inter-year”,
pastors are urged to complete a self-defined personal
project. They also have access to lodging and on-campus
study rooms, or “cloisters”, for prayer, meditation,
personal study and relaxation. This feature of the program
is in response to many Korean pastors’ desire to experience
occasional mid-week retreats of prayer and self-renewal.
The development of lasting relationships and a renewed
spirit of refreshment are already apparent. A 2003
participant who had been struggling with fatigue and
depression confided that the entire CPR program experience
had been a “timely gift from heaven,” rejuvenating him for
the ministry. His and others’ experience of much-needed
spiritual, mental, and physical refreshment encourages us to
expect that CPR will continue to meet a vital need.
