Summer Greek
On July 24 2006 at 8:00 AM, 30 new students eagerly embarked on a journey of Summer Greek I. This summer course is an intensive class that inaugurates the language requirements for both the Master of Divinity and Master of Arts degree programs.

Language study is an important enterprise here at WSC - not for the sake of language itself, but for the sake of accurate interpretation of Scripture. WSC also offers an introduction to Greek I that spans over the winter and spring semesters (from January to May).

If you would like more information about biblical language courses, please contact the WSC admissions office at 760/480.8474 or via email.

July 2-6 Dr. Bryan Estelle presented a paper entitled, "The Riddle of Galatians 3:10 and its Context: Revisited Again" at the International Meeting of the Society of Biblical Literature. This meeting was held at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. Recently the confessional view of the law's requirement of perfect obedience has been repeatedly called into question. Few passages in the New Testament have received as much attention in this debate as Galatians 3. Uncovering the logic of Galatians 3 has turned into a major focal point in the debate. The thesis of Professor Estelle's paper is that a modern linguistic communication theory, i.e., relevance theory, has tremendous explanatory power for the text under consideration.

June 30-July 1, Dr. R. Scott Clark spoke on "Recovering the Reformed Confession." at The Westminster Confession into the 21st Century, Pittsburgh, PA. The contemporary Reformed community faces an identity crisis. We are tempted to define our identity by looking in the mirror. To use our own reflection as the baseline for the definition of what it is to be Reformed would be a significant mistake. This lecture will argue that there is a better and more reliable definition of the Reformed identity in the Reformed confessions as understood by the Reformed tradition. JUNE 2006

A Heartfelt Farewell to Dr. Iain Duguid
With a mixture of sadness and joy, the WSC community bids farewell to Dr. Iain Duguid, his wife Barb, and their five children as they set out for Grove City College in western Pennsylvania on June 20, 2006.

We rejoice that the Lord has provided an opportunity for Dr. Duguid to bring his insights into the Christ-centered message of the whole Bible into the formation of so many young adults. We also rejoice that Dr. Duguid's move to the Grove City College faculty adds another bond of friendship and partnership in the Gospel between WSC and GCC.

We will miss the Duguids here, and certainly students who have studied under Dr. Duguid will recall with appreciation his blend of insightful Old Testament scholarship and a deep pastoral passion (and practical wisdom) for preaching the Word to the church. Recognizing Dr. Duguid's decade of teaching here, we have come to expect that his exegesis of an OT text in the classroom will inevitably lead to the question, "Now, how should we preach this?"

We are thankful that the move to Grove City does not mean the end of our collaboration with Dr. Duguid and of his ministry to our students. We look forward to welcoming him back in January 2007 to teach an elective on Esther and a portion of the Prophets course.

June 15, Dr. Peter Jones lectured twice at the Blackstone Legal Fellowship --a nine-week summer leadership development program in law and servant ministry for exceptionally capable and highly motivated Christian law students. For details visit The Blackstone Legal Fellowship.

Jones Responds to Da Vinci Code
WSC's scholar-in-residence, Dr. Peter Jones, responded to the influence of the popular bestselling novel, The Da Vinci Code. He has co-authored with James Garlow a book called Cracking Da Vinci's Code.

APRIL 2006

Profs. Clark and Horton announce new book releases
Caspar Olevian and the Substance of the Covenant: The Double Benefit of Christ
by R. Scott Clark
This study of Caspar Olevian's doctrine of the covenant and its 'twofold benefit', justification and sanctification, places Olevian's thought in historical context, and, by so doing, puts to rest a number of misconstructions of doctrinal development during this time while shedding new light upon the relationship of Olevian's theology to that of the Heidelberg Catechism, of Calvin and of the wider Reformed world.

God of Promise: Introducing Covenant Theology
by Michael Horton
In this masterful summary of covenant theology, Horton carefully shows how systematic covenant theology holds together many important biblical principles. Clear and comprehensive, this book is the ideal introduction to covenant theology.
- Dr. Philip Graham Ryken, senior minister, Tenth Presbyterian Church, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

JANUARY 2006

Special Lecture by James Herrick
WSC and Christian Witness to a Pagan Planet (CWIPP) sponsored a public lecture “New Spiritualities, New Mythologies, and the Search for New Gods” by Professor James Herrick, Guy Vander Jagt Professor of Communication, Hope College in Holland, MI. The lecture took place on Wednesday, January 25, 2006, in the WSC chapel.

Dr. Herrick is an informed observer of the spiritual revolution that is going on all around us, having written one of the major books on the subject, The Making of the New Spirituality (IVP, 2003). This present lecture showed the deep connection between the neo-pagan understanding of a divine, evolving Nature with what is being developed in certain areas of science and science fiction.

CWIPP is an organization dedicated to equipping the Church in bringing the good news of the Gospel to an increasingly pagan world. For more information, visit www.cwipp.org.
