with Michael Horton
The final Warfield Seminar for the semester was held
on Wednesday, November 12, at 12.45 in Room 4 to discuss
Dr. Michael Horton's paper, "Law and Gospel: Contrast
or Continuity?"
The Warfield Seminar is an opportunity for students to
engage in informal conversation with professors on their
current research. It is held about three times a semester,
and a professor makes available a paper that he has been
working on, often in preparation for a conference
presentation, journal article, or chapter in a book. At the
Warfield Seminar the professor presents his argument and
engages in discussion with students and professors about his
research and conclusions. Students have the opportunity to
expand the horizons of their theological education through
this seminar.

group of churches in the area that put on a conference each

Dr. Hywel R. Jones was a featured speaker at New
England Reformed Fellowship Conference on October 24-25,
2008. The conference theme was "Of Messiah Jesus: from Isaiah
and from John," and Dr. Jones' seminars focused on the
Gospel of John.

Esther Meek as Guest Lecturer The
Westminster Student Association (WSA) invited Dr.
Esther Meek
to be the WSA Fall 2008 guest speaker on October 14,
2008. Dr. Meek delivered a convocation lecture at 10:00
followed by a discussion of her book,
Longing to Know, in the first hour of the Christian
Mind class with Dr.
Horton at
11:20-12:15. A pizza lunch for the student body followed,
and students had the opportunity to ask questions to Dr.
Meek.
Dr.
Meek is an Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Geneva
College. This event was sponsored by the WSA. Every
semester, the WSC seeks to invite scholars who are experts
in their field and whose writings are used in the curriculum
at WSC.

Dr. Hywel R. Jones was the featured speaker at
the 2008 Spiritual Enrichment Services at Independent Presbyterian Church
in Savannah GA.
He spoke on the theme "True Spirituality: The Word of
God and the Way of the Godly - Psalm 119," focusing on
biblical spirituality that is Christ-centered and
God-honoring.

Dr.
Dennis E. Johnson
taught at a pastors' conference in Tanzania. He and
Rev. Ken Jones (pastor of
Greater
Union Baptist Church and
White Horse Inn) taught 50 pastors of the
Evangelical Lutheran Church of Tanzania (ELCT), at
the invitation of Bishop Martin Shao of the Northern
Diocese. The conference was organized by the
Rafiki Foundation, which operates a village for
orphans in Moshi, Tanzania (and similar villages in
9 other African nations). Dr. Johnson spoke on the
theme: "Preaching Christ from All the Scriptures."

The Center for Pastoral Refreshment (CPR) at WSC welcomed a group of
Korean-American pastors at its Summer Sabbatical program held at the Pala Mesa Resort in
Fallbrook, CA. A unique institute at WSC, CPR exists to
sustain ministry excellence among immigrant
Korean-American pastors in Presbyterian and Reformed
churches.

of the course was to describe the postmodern context, to
reflect on both challenges and opportunities, and to suggest
a "third way" beyond wholesale acceptance or rejection of
current cultural trends.

Commencement was held on May 31, 2008. Thirty-four Master’s
degrees were conferred at the ceremony, including 23 Master
of Divinity degrees and 11 Master of Arts degrees. The
Commencement Address was given by Dr. R.C. Sproul.

On Saturday, May 17, WSC held the annual Strimple
Classic, the end-of-Spring-semester celebration/softball
game that pits the graduating senior class and faculty
against the junior and middler students. This event is named after
Dr. Robert B. Strimple,
President Emeritus and Professor Emeritus of Systematic
Theology.

purpose of the OPC Timothy Conference is to seek out and
encourage godly young Orthodox Presbyterian men to consider
the gifts God has given them and whether the Lord of the
church may be calling them to pursue the gospel ministry.

Lectures on Pastoral Ministry
WSC's annual den Dulk Lectures on Pastoral Ministry were held
on March 4-6 with
guest speaker the Rev. Dr. Wilson Benton, recently retired
senior pastor of Kirk of the Hills Presbyterian Church (PCA) in St. Louis. Dr. Benton lectured on "Critical
Aspects of the Pastor’s Life: Pastoring, Planning and
Parenting."
This special lecture series is sponsored by the friends of
Bob and Nellie den Dulk for the purpose of bringing an
experienced minister on campus to provide wisdom and insight
to WSC M.Div. students.

Ceremony for Dr. David VanDrunen
WSC celebrated the promotion of Dr. David M. VanDrunen
to Robert B. Strimple Professor of Systematic Theology and
Christian Ethics with an inauguration ceremony on Tuesday,
February 19.
Dr. VanDrunen's inaugural address was entitled "The Two
Kingdoms and the Ordo Salutis: Life Beyond Judgment and the
Question of a Dual Ethic."

Orientation
On February 11, 2008, new winter and spring term students
began their educational careers at Westminster Seminary
California as they gathered for New Student Orientation. Drs.
Dennis Johnson (Dean of Students), Julius Kim (Academic
Dean) and other staff orientated new students to Seminary
life, policies, and resources.
