In the heart of his letter to the Galatians, Paul presents God’s glorious, gracious remedy to our alienation, guilt, and spiritual dehydration. In Christ and through faith in him, we receive four amazing, interrelated gifts of mercy: (1) forgiveness because Christ endured the curse we deserve (3:13); (2) approval and blessing on the basis of Christ’s righteous obedience, inside and out, birth through death (3:14); (3) adoption as God’s beloved sons and heirs, both women and men, Gentile and Jew, slave and free (3:26-29); (4) the indwelling presence of the Spirit of God’s son, through whom we can call God, “Abba, Father” (4:6-7). In Christ we experience the warm embrace of God’s grace.
