Just as “the “Lord’s Prayer” concludes with “deliver us from evil” so also our Lord’s prayer in John 17 includes “keep them from the evil one.” Christ prays for the safe-keeping of his own and encourages them to do the same. Perhaps that’s why prayer is placed alongside the pieces of the armor of God. The danger is real.
