Christian Locatell

Why did you choose to attend WSC?
I chose to attend WSC because of its reputation for academic excellence and doctrinal soundness. I soon found out that I did not know the half of it. I came to deeply appreciate the profoundly impactful pastoral training that WSC offers in addition to its high academic and doctrinal standards that are second to none.
What is one of your favorite WSC experiences thus far?
My favorite experience was taking a directed research class with Professor Joel Kim called Greek Readings in the Apostolic Fathers. I met one-on-one with Professor Kim several times as we worked through various chapters of 1st Clement, the earliest known Christian writing outside of the New Testament. This class was truly a joy to take and had application for so many areas of study. I developed my skills in Greek by being exposed to literature outside of the New Testament, and I was able to peer through the earliest window into the life of the Church after the time of the Apostles.
Various issues arose concerning the New Testament canon and how 1 Clement quotes Scripture. Professor Kim adeptly brought thoughtful considerations and reflections to each of these issues. This is indicative of how each professor at WSC skillfully develops the knowledge, ability, and character of their students.
You recently won a scholarship from the Marguerite Young Endowment Fund. How did your education and experiences thus far at WSC contribute to your essay?
The essay topic chosen by the Pittsburgh Foundation was "What is the role of God's Word in your ministry?" (Download PDF of essay.) My education and experiences at WSC have developed my understanding of God's Word systematically and pastorally. I have come to more clearly understand what God's Word is, its indispensability for Christian life and ministry, and how to rightly minister the Word to God's people and the world. Looking back on my knowledge and maturity before I came to Westminster, I am confident that I would not have been competent to be a minister of God's Word without the training I have received here.
How will this scholarship assist you with your studies at WSC?
This scholarship is a great blessing to my family and me. Because of this award as well as the low tuition and generous financial aid from WSC, I will be able to have gone through the entire M.Div. program debt free. This relieves a tremendous financial weight that allows me to focus more intently on my studies.
What would you say to other current and prospective students about applying for outside scholarships and grants?
I would encourage them to take advantage of the amazing resource that the WSC community has in the Financial Aid Coordinator Barbara Clark. She will work hard to help you with any questions you may have regarding financial aid. I found out about the Marguerite Young Endowment Fund through her diligent service to WSC students in notifying us of various upcoming scholarships.
I would also recommend seeking out and applying for as many outside scholarships as you can. WSC has great financial aid, but there is so much more to be had from outside sources. It is definitely worth the time.
What do you plan to do after you graduate from WSC?
My wife Holly and I are working toward doing Bible translation and church planting among Bible-less people groups.
